A Renaissance seat on the Soła

The Old Castle in Żywiec stands in the town centre, where the Soła and Koszarawa valleys meet, on the edge of a large park. Its beginnings go back to the 15th century, when a masonry residential tower replaced an earlier stronghold. The Komorowski family expanded it, turning the defensive seat first into a small fortress and then into a comfortable Renaissance residence.

Museum and interiors

The castle's showpiece is the perfectly preserved arcaded courtyard with two tiers of cloisters — a rare example of Italian models in this part of the Carpathians. Since 2005 the walls have housed the Municipal Museum, with an ethnographic display, collections devoted to the Żywiec region and temporary exhibitions. The museum complements the Silesian Wooden Architecture Route.

The surroundings

Adjoining the castle is a landscape park with old trees, a pond and the 19th-century New Castle of the Habsburgs. It is a convenient base for exploring the Żywiec region, Lake Żywieckie and the Żywiec Beskids.
