Sandomierz Castle stands on a high escarpment above the Vistula, right beside the old town. The masonry stronghold was founded in the 14th century by Casimir the Great on the site of an earlier settlement, and over the following centuries it was extended into a Renaissance royal residence. After the destruction of the Swedish Deluge, mainly the western wing survived — the part seen today.
The castle is now home to the District Museum. Permanent exhibitions present the archaeology of the region, historic furnishings, painting and mementoes tied to the town's past. The stately knights' hall hosts concerts and meetings, and the restored southern tower is among the most interesting parts of the building.
The escarpment offers a broad view over the Vistula valley. A few minutes' walk away lie the market square with the town hall, the cathedral, the Opatów Gate and the entrance to the Underground Tourist Route, so the castle fits well into a full day in Sandomierz.
