ul. Zamkowa, Jawor
The Piast Castle stands in the western part of old Jawor, on Zamkowa Street, and is one of the oldest masonry buildings in town. Its present shape results from many rebuildings, so a medieval core is combined with later, far plainer sections.
The complex began as a defensive residential tower surrounded by a rampart and a moat, raised at a time when Jawor was becoming a seat of power in fragmented Lower Silesia. The expansion of the masonry residence is attributed to Bolko I the Strict. The castle suffered during the Thirty Years' War, was rebuilt several times, and for a long period housed a prison that operated until the mid-20th century.
A visit today centres on the Regional Museum in Jawor, which presents the history of the castle and of the Jawor region. The museum also opens the castle tower, offering a panorama of the town and the surrounding hills. The building itself shows signs of neglect, but together with the market square and the Church of Peace it makes a sound plan for a few hours' stop.
