ul. Zamkowa, Wieś Morsko
Bąkowiec is the ruin of a small castle in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, at Morsko in the Zawiercie district. It belongs to the Trail of the Eagles' Nests and, like most links in that chain, uses natural limestone outcrops as part of its fortifications. Fragments of walls, remains of a tower and the outline of the courtyard survive, fused into the rock.
The origins of the stronghold are not firmly documented. It is assumed that the masonry castle was built in the times of Casimir the Great and guarded the border between Silesia and Lesser Poland. Over the following centuries it passed through many hands and in the 17th century was finally abandoned. Conservation work was carried out in 1961 and the site was entered in the register of monuments six years later.
The ruins are privately owned and adjoin a holiday resort. A visit amounts to walking around the walls from the outside and taking in the rocky surroundings — a quarter of an hour is enough. Hiking and cycling trails of the upland run nearby, and the surrounding crags are a popular climbing area.
