ul. Podzamcze 3, Reszel
The brick stronghold of the bishops of Warmia stands on a bluff above the Sajna river, right next to Reszel's old town. Its compact quadrangular body with a tall tower is one of the best preserved Gothic castles in Warmia and, together with the parish church, defines the town's skyline.
The first fortifications were raised here in Teutonic times, in the 13th century, and construction of the masonry castle began at the order of Bishop John I of Meissen. The 16th-century expansion under Bishop Lucas Watzenrode brought new curtain walls; a frequent guest at the time was his nephew Nicolaus Copernicus, the bishop's secretary and physician. The building was later turned into a residence.
The walls house a contemporary art gallery and a hotel, and the castle hosts exhibitions, concerts and open-air events. The visitor route covers the courtyard, the interiors and the tower, with views over the Sajna valley and the roofs of Reszel. The town lies close to the sanctuary at Święta Lipka, which makes it easy to plan a longer route through Warmia.
