Kwidzyn Castle is one of the best preserved Gothic defensive complexes in the Powiśle region, built in the 14th century on the model of Teutonic strongholds. It was raised as the seat of the Pomesanian cathedral chapter and, together with the adjoining cathedral, forms a compact complex ranked as a Monument of History. It stands in the centre of Kwidzyn, on the escarpment above the Vistula valley.
The most distinctive element is the gdanisko projecting to the west — a latrine tower linked to the castle by a long gallery carried on arcades. The second curiosity is the well tower. The south-eastern corner tower was converted into the cathedral belfry, so that castle and church grew into a single mass.
The castle houses a museum devoted to the material culture of the Lower Powiśle: decorative crafts of Warmia and Pomerania, natural history collections and a display of old instruments of torture. Temporary exhibitions on changing themes complete the programme. A visit takes about an hour and the place also works well in bad weather.
