The ruins of the castle in Międzyrzecz occupy a rise in the fork of the Obra and the Paklica, on the site of an earlier stronghold guarding the western border of the Piast state. The masonry fortress was raised around the middle of the 14th century, in the times of Casimir the Great, on a plan adapted to the shape of the island.
In the Piast period the castle served as a border watchpost, later as the seat of the castellans and starosts of Międzyrzecz. A 16th-century rebuilding adapted it to firearms, yet the damage of the Swedish Deluge proved irreversible and the stronghold was never restored. The surviving walls have been secured as a permanent ruin.
The castle island holds a reconstructed gatehouse and the Museum of the Międzyrzecz Region, known for its collection of coffin portraits. An inn also belongs to the complex. Everything is surrounded by the 19th-century Castle Park with old trees and a moat, pleasant for a walk alongside the exhibition.
