The castle in Szydłów is one of the largest defensive foundations of Casimir the Great. It was built in the 14th century on a slope falling towards the valley of the small Ciekąca river and, together with the preserved ring of town walls and the Kraków Gate, forms one of the finest examples of a medieval fortified town in Poland.
The complex included a spacious courtyard and a royal palace in its southern part. The building was rebuilt in the 15th century and twice in the 16th, after the fires of 1528 and 1541. Another fire in the 17th century left it in ruin; reconstruction came only in 1723, thanks to the starost Józef Załuski. Later centuries brought renewed decay and post-war restoration.
Today the walls house the Museum of Royal Castles, with a display devoted to the foundations of Casimir the Great. A combined ticket also covers the other monuments of Szydłów: the synagogue, the All Saints church and the Holy Spirit hospital. The castle takes about an hour; walking the whole town takes half a day.
