Oporów 34, Wieś Oporów
The Castle Museum in Oporów is one of the best preserved late Gothic knightly residences in Poland. The moated building was raised in 1434-1449 in the village of Oporów near Kutno, on the initiative of Władysław Oporowski, bishop of Kuyavia. It was never remodelled in the spirit of later periods, so its medieval layout remains clearly legible.
The complex consists of a residential tower, wings enclosing a small courtyard, defensive walls and a semicircular bastion with a chapel on the upper floor. Over the following centuries the estate passed to the Tarnowski family and then to the Sołłohub family. Adjoining the castle is a park with a Swiss cottage and the so-called Gothic cottage, both also part of the museum.
Since 1949 the interiors have housed a museum of manor interiors: furniture, works of art and craftsmanship illustrate the culture of the Polish nobility. The route leads through the entrance hall, the treasury and the room at the base of the tower, and upstairs through the parlour, the dining room and the knights' hall.
