The Teutonic castle in Ostróda stands at the fork of the Drwęca river, right where it flows into Lake Drwęckie, in the centre of town. Work on the brick stronghold began in the mid-14th century and was still under way in the 1380s. Originally it was a four-wing, towerless complex on an almost square plan — the layout typical of a Teutonic convent castle. Three wings survive today, and a curtain wall closes the quadrangle from the east.
The building changed hands remarkably often. In the 15th century it passed twice into Polish hands, and after the secularisation of Prussia in 1525 it became the seat of a starosty. Through the second half of the 16th century and the whole of the 17th it repeatedly changed owners and functions.
The walls now house the municipal museum. Two exhibition rooms have been arranged in the former castle chambers; one holds a permanent display devoted to the history of Ostróda and its surroundings.
