Wyspa Zamkowa, Jezioro Góreckie, Stęszew
The ruins of a neo-Gothic castle stand on Castle Island, covering about 1.25 ha, in the middle of Lake Góreckie in the Wielkopolska National Park, in the Stęszew commune near Poznań. The building was erected between 1824 and 1825 as a wedding present from Tytus Działyński to his sister, Klaudyna Potocka.
Klaudyna and her husband Bernard lived on the island for only a few years, until the outbreak of the November Uprising in 1830, and never returned. The castle was destroyed in 1848 during the Spring of Nations, when the building came under fire. It has remained a permanent ruin ever since — its island location makes conservation work extremely difficult.
The island is under strict national park protection and is closed to visitors — the walls are viewed from the shore and from the trails running around the lake. Trees of the former park survive here, including the non-native tree of heaven. The walk around Lake Góreckie is one of the most popular routes in the park.
