Plac Zamkowy 1, Lidzbark Warmiński
The castle in Lidzbark Warmiński is one of Poland's finest Gothic monuments and for centuries the main residence of the Warmian bishops. It was raised in the 14th century on a quadrangular plan at the fork of the Łyna and Symsarna rivers; a perimeter wall and a moat protected it from the south and east. Under Bishop Sorbom the courtyard was surrounded by two-storey cloisters, which still make the strongest impression on visitors.
In the courtyard of the outer ward stands a Baroque statue of Saint Catherine from 1756, funded by Bishop Grabowski. In the second half of the 19th century the restoration was led by the royal conservator Ferdinand von Quast, which spared the building the fate of many Warmian castles.
The walls house the Warmian Museum. The town itself, still little known to tourists, has kept its medieval layout and fragments of its fortifications.
