ul. Zamkowa, Niemodlin
The castle in Niemodlin in the Opole region is a lowland brick residence of late Renaissance character, with Baroque additions and surviving Gothic remains. Its beginnings go back to the 14th century, when it was built by Bolesław, son of Duke Bolko I of Opole, on the site of a former castellany. The castle then became the seat of the dukes of Niemodlin.
The building was destroyed and rebuilt several times: it suffered during the Hussite wars, burned down in 1552, and after further reconstructions took on a Renaissance appearance. In the 17th century a castle chapel was added, and soon afterwards the Thirty Years' War damaged the site again. Today's structure records these layers of style.
The castle is open to visitors and is known for family attractions: a medieval torture chamber, a replica of the Amber Room, feasts and knightly shows. Thanks to them it ranks among the most visited monuments of the Opole province, awarded in Polish Tourist Organisation polls.
