Wieś Świecie
The ruins of Świecie Castle rise above the village in the Lubań district, on a steep basalt hill over the Kwisa valley. The stronghold was probably raised in the 14th century on the initiative of Bernard, Duke of Świdnica and Jawor, to guard the route running from Lusatia through Lubań to Jelenia Góra. It belonged to the group of watch castles known as the Kwisa District.
Fires shaped the building's history. After the first, in 1527, the castle was rebuilt in Renaissance forms; after the next, in the mid-17th century, a Baroque palace was added in the eastern part. The third fire, in 1827, turned the complex into a permanent ruin that was never restored. The site comprised a tower, a residential building, a chapel and a courtyard, enclosed by a defensive wall with a gate on the west side and a moat.
The site belongs to private owners, who are salvaging the remaining walls and opening them to visitors. From the top there is a wide view over the Izera Foothills.
