Ujazd 73, Wieś Ujazd
Krzyżtopór at Ujazd is one of the most extraordinary residences of the old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth — a palazzo in fortezza that combines an Italianate palace with bastion fortifications. It was built in the 17th century, founded by the voivode Krzysztof Ossoliński, and before Versailles was raised it was reckoned the largest palace complex in Europe.
The site consisted of three parts: the palace with its farm buildings, the defensive perimeter with bastions and a moat, and an Italian garden beyond the line of fortifications. The three-storey main block was built on a rectangular plan around an elliptical inner courtyard; to the north-west a wing with a great hall on the upper floor was added, closed by an octagonal tower. Ossoliński died a year after the works were finished, and the Swedes took the residence in 1655.
The surviving walls, bastions and moat impress by their sheer scale. Several visiting routes are available, including evening ones.
