The stone castle in Będzin stands on a high escarpment above the left bank of the Czarna Przemsza river and is an example of defensive architecture from the mid-14th century. The tradition of fortification here goes back to the 9th century, when Castle Hill held a stronghold associated with the Vistulan tribe.
The fortress was an important element in the defence of Poland's western border against incursions from Silesia and Bohemia, and it also guarded trade routes, including the road from Silesia to Cracow. In 1364 Emperor Charles IV was a guest here, and in 1434 the castle hosted an agreement between Silesian and Lesser Poland lords on fighting border robbers.
Since 1956 the castle has housed the Zagłębie Museum — the first museum institution in the region. The tower offers a broad view over the town and the Czarna Przemsza valley. A knightly brotherhood is active at the castle, with tournaments during the Będzin Town Days and black-powder shooting contests.
