Wieś Wytrzyszczka
Tropsztyn stands on a steep headland surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Dunajec, next to the village of Wytrzyszczka in the Czchów commune. The rocky bluff and the river surface form a natural fortification that medieval builders only had to complete with a curtain wall. The present structure is a reconstruction faithfully reproducing the old outline of the stronghold.
The castle guarded the route running along the Dunajec valley and changed hands over the centuries, falling gradually into ruin from the 17th century. In 1970 the hill with the remains of the walls passed into private hands, and two decades later a foundation set up for the purpose carried out the rebuilding and opened the site to visitors.
The display inside presents the history of the stronghold and the well-known legend of an Inca treasure said to be hidden in the cellars. The courtyard and the walls offer a view of the Dunajec gorge and of the village of Tropie on the opposite bank, with its old Romanesque church.
