ul. Zamkowa, Wieś Łapalice
The castle in Łapalice near Kartuzy is one of the best-known cases of unauthorised construction in Poland. Work was begun in 1983 by Piotr Kazimierczak, who held a permit for a building of 170 m² but erected a structure of about 5,000 square metres, with numerous towers.
Construction stopped in the 1990s because of financial problems. In 2006 the county building inspectorate ordered demolition, but the owner challenged the decision before the provincial authority and the case has remained unresolved ever since. The castle therefore stands as a shell, without windows and in many places without floors.
The place has taken on a life of its own: tourists come from all over Poland, wedding and photo sessions are held here, and families picnic on the grounds. The building is often compared to castles from film fiction. Note: this is an unsecured construction site, and moving around inside is risky.
