ul. Zamkowa, Wieś Wojnowice
The castle in Wojnowice near Wrocław is one of the few surviving moated fortified manors in Poland. The Gothic and Renaissance building was raised on a rectangular plan on an island encircled by a moat, reached from the north by a brick bridge. It has kept its essential shape and original spatial layout, which makes it a valuable example of late medieval Silesian architecture.
Records mention the castle from the 14th century, and in the following centuries it belonged to Silesian families, among them the von Schellendorf and von Krickov. In the 16th century it was owned by the poet Achatius Haunold and later by burghers of Wrocław, while the last family to hold the estate were the von Livonius.
Today the site is looked after by the Jan Nowak-Jeziorański College of Eastern Europe. The walls house offices, a restaurant and hotel rooms, and the castle is occasionally opened to visitors and hosts concerts. It is worth checking available dates in advance.
