A castle in Ścinawka Średnia

Kapitanowo Castle stands in the village of Ścinawka Średnia in the Kłodzko Valley, between Nowa Ruda and Radków. Its oldest part is the donjon, a massive residential and defensive tower built in the 14th century, around which later buildings grew. The name refers to its role as the seat of the captain who administered the surrounding estate.

History and rebuilding

In the 16th and 17th centuries the residence took on a Renaissance character, and in the Baroque era some of the architectural detail and interior decoration was altered to match the fashion of the day. The building was still in use in the second half of the 20th century, but after being abandoned in the 1990s it quickly began to decline. Even so, it has kept a legible layout and many original features.

Visiting

The castle belongs to a private owner who is carrying out restoration work and admits visitors with his consent, so it is worth arranging a visit in advance. The area makes a good base for trips into the Stołowe and Sowie Mountains.
