Wojciechów 9, Wieś Wojciechów
The Arian Tower in Wojciechów in the Lublin region is one of the best preserved masonry residential and defensive towers in Poland. It was built in 1527 on the initiative of Jan Pilecki, starost of Lublin, who rebuilt the older fortifications in a form adapted to firearms. The former grange was then surrounded by a wall with loopholes.
The top floor houses the Blacksmithing Museum, opened in 1993 and holding almost 1,500 exhibits from Poland and abroad. The heart of the display is a fully equipped old forge with a hearth, anvil, hand-operated bellows and a complete set of smithing tools. The museum welcomes more than eight thousand visitors a year.
The tower is home to the local cultural centre, which runs museum lessons and workshops: making horseshoes from salt dough and decorating iron. It is a particularly good choice for children. The successive floors are reached by steep stairs.
