Plac Wolności 42, Międzylesie
The castle in Międzylesie, in the Kłodzko region, combines Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. The original stronghold was raised in 1370 as the seat of the Glaubitz family and was destroyed during the Hussite wars. In the 16th century the Tschirnhaus family built a Renaissance manor on the site, part of which survives among today's buildings.
In the 17th century the manor suffered twice — first during the Thirty Years' War, later in a fire that swept the town. The Baroque wings and wall were added by the Althann family, owners from 1653, to a design by Jakob Carova. In the 20th century the castle was renovated and used as a holiday centre for children, until another fire in 1974.
In 2008–2009 a new owner restored the Baroque wing and adapted it for a restaurant and hotel rooms. The site is open to visitors, and the older Gothic and Renaissance parts make an impression through their contrast with the renewed Baroque. Międzylesie lies at the gateway to the Śnieżnik Massif, close to the Czech border crossing.
