The castle in Czorsztyn is the ruin of a medieval stronghold on a rocky hill above the Dunajec, today overlooking Lake Czorsztyńskie. Opposite, on the other side of the valley, stands Dunajec Castle in Niedzica — the pair of strongholds guarded the old border and the trade route to Hungary.
Jan Długosz named Piotr Wydżga of the Janina coat of arms as the owner in 1246, but historians treat that account with caution and link the castle's beginnings with a stronghold from the time of St Kinga. The most important expansion was carried out by Casimir the Great, who surrounded the castle with defensive walls, making it one of the country's more important fortifications.
Destruction began with devastation by Cossack troops in 1734–1735, and in 1790 lightning burnt the roofs, sealing the building's fate. Today the ruins are cared for by the Pieniny National Park; the Pieniny wallflower grows here, an endemic plant found only in these mountains. The hill offers a view of the dam and the Tatras.
