pl. Zamkowy 1, Kętrzyn
The castle stands on Zamkowy Square in Kętrzyn in Masuria and ranks among the town's most recognisable monuments. It was built in the second half of the 14th century, between 1360 and 1374, on the site of an earlier Teutonic stronghold, as the seat of the Order's procurator. It contained a chapel, and a well operated in the courtyard.
Around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries the complex was enclosed from the north, east and south by a defensive wall with cylindrical corner towers adapted for firearms. In the 18th and 19th centuries the castle and the adjoining farm served as the seat of a royal domain. The building burned down during the Second World War; the reconstruction of 1962–1967 restored its Gothic character by raising the roofs and wings and adding Gothic gables.
Today the walls house the Wojciech Kętrzyński Museum with Gothic sculpture, artistic craftwork and furniture from the 17th and 19th centuries. Part of the rooms is occupied by the Municipal Public Library. The visit is short and works well as a stop on a journey across Masuria, also in poor weather.
