The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes stands in Darłowo, on an island formed by the arms of the Wieprza, a few kilometres from the seaside district of Darłówko. The brick Gothic stronghold was raised by the Pomeranian dukes in the second half of the 14th century; over time the defensive castle was turned into a residence with a courtyard enclosed by wings.
Darłowo is linked with Eric of Pomerania, ruler of the Kalmar Union, who returned to his home region after losing his thrones and spent his last years here. It is one of the few castles in Poland with such a distinct Scandinavian thread, present in the museum display as well.
The castle now houses a museum with collections of art, craft and regional memorabilia presenting the history of Pomerania and of the town itself. The interiors include state rooms, cellars and a chapel. Stairs lead up the tower, and from the top you can see all of Darłowo, the Wieprza valley and the coastal belt. The castle also hosts concerts and cultural events.
