The Teutonic castle in Sztum was built in the 14th century on an island in Lake Białe, south-east of Gdańsk. The stronghold shielded Malbork from the south and at the same time served the grand masters of the order as a summer residence — hence its less austere, more restful character.
In the 15th century the castle passed into Polish hands and became the seat of starosts, though depending on the political situation it also came under Swedish, Prussian and German rule. Centuries of changing owners left their mark on the buildings: some wings were pulled down, others converted for administrative use.
The main south wing, fragments of the east wing, the entrance gate, the well and remnants of the walls and two bastions survive today. The site operates as a branch of the Castle Museum in Malbork. A local knights' brotherhood stages archery displays, historical dances and battle re-enactments here. Next to the castle stands the Neo-Gothic church of St Anne.
