The Castle Museum occupies the castle hill in the centre of Oświęcim, surrounded by old-growth trees. The castle with its tower, walls and buildings on the hill is one of the town's most important monuments and a reminder of more than 800 years of history — the history that preceded the events Oświęcim is best known for today. The museum in its present form has operated since 2010.
The institution promotes the history of the town and its surroundings. The archaeological section presents finds from excavations on the castle hill: seals, coins and everyday objects. The religious display shows Catholic and Jewish objects, since both rites shaped the history of Oświęcim. The ethnographic department recreates domestic interiors and the way of life of former inhabitants.
A separate part is devoted to Aleksander Orłowski — painter, draughtsman and pioneer of lithography, author of the Oświęcim bugle call. The castle and the museum are open all year round, except for days set aside for conservation work. The visit leads mainly through interiors, so it also works on a rainy day.
