The remains of the royal castle stand on a scarp above the confluence of the Kamienica and the Dunajec, in the northern part of Nowy Sącz. The stronghold was raised in the 14th century on the initiative of Casimir the Great, and its walls once enclosed a spacious courtyard. The grounds of the former complex are now a municipal park.
The castle declined after a fire in the 17th century and was finally destroyed by the explosion of ammunition stored here at the end of the Second World War. Fragments of the curtain walls survive, with window openings, brick vaults and loopholes, along with the rebuilt Kowalska Tower — the most recognisable part of the ruins.
The setting is park-like: paths, benches and a view over the Dunajec valley make the place best suited to a short rest. Entry to the grounds is free and possible all year round, dogs included. The main paths are surfaced, so the approach to the ruins is also manageable with a pushchair or wheelchair.
