A Teutonic stronghold in Radzyń Chełmiński

The ruins stand on flat ground at the edge of Radzyń Chełmiński in the Grudziądz district. The brick castle was raised in the 13th century on the site of an earlier timber-and-earth stronghold and had a three-part layout: the main castle and smaller southern and eastern sections. In the evening the mass of the walls is impressively floodlit.

A turbulent past

Over the centuries the site passed from the Teutonic Knights to Poland, Sweden and Prussia, and successive wars left their mark on it. From 1776 it stood abandoned and was systematically dismantled for building material. The first protective measures were taken only at the end of the 19th century, and part of the walls was reconstructed much later.

What you will see on site

The best preserved element is the southern wing with the chapel; relics of the refectory, dormitory and chapter house are also legible. The scale of the surviving walls conveys the original ambition of the complex well. The site is looked after by a private tenant carrying out ongoing repairs, so the extent of access may vary.
