Zamek Bierzgłowski lies in the village of the same name, about 10 km north-west of Toruń. It is one of the oldest surviving defensive buildings of the Teutonic Order in the Chełmno Land. Raised after 1270 of stone and brick, it consisted of the convent house and an outer bailey ringed by a wall and a deep moat.
Its most valuable element is the tympanum, regarded as the oldest surviving work of sculpture in historic Prussia and one of the more important pieces of medieval ceramics in this part of Europe. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt many times, so layers from different periods can be read in its fabric.
Since 1992 the site has belonged to the Toruń diocese, which carries out conservation work and runs a Diocesan Cultural Centre and a retreat house here. Part of the rooms is open to visitors — the castle chapel is especially worth a look. The whole complex is a protected monument.
