The ruins of the Muszyna castle stand on a steep hill known as Baszta, directly above a bend of the Poprad, between the Szczawnik and Muszynka streams. From the top there is a view over the town and the ridges of the Beskid Sądecki around it, and the climb from the market square takes a little over ten minutes.
Archaeological research shows that a wooden stronghold stood here as early as the 11th century. The stone castle was built at the end of the 14th century and guarded the route towards Hungary; on the hill side it was separated by a moat with a drawbridge. Fragments of the walls on the southern side and the stump of the tower survive today.
Beside the walls, on a stone plinth, stands a figure of the Virgin Mary — the first was placed here in 1936, and the hill remains a site of traditional May devotions. The grounds are laid out as a small square with ornamental shrubs, next to it stands a chapel from 1992, and a public mineral spring called Anna flows nearby.
