Plac Zamkowy 4, Piotrków Trybunalski
The Royal Castle stands just beyond the line of the former town walls, by Plac Zamkowy. The 16th-century brick and sandstone building resembles a grand townhouse rather than a stronghold and is regarded as one of the first structures in Poland erected in the Renaissance style.
At the height of its importance the Polish parliament met here, but the castle soon lost its role and began to decay. Successive attempts to save it brought only partial results. After the First World War the building was taken over by a tourist society, which set up a museum in it and carried out a restoration that brought back the Renaissance character of the interiors.
The collection comprises around seventeen thousand objects in four departments: archaeology, ethnography, history and art. The permanent displays feature paintings, historic weapons, furniture and mementoes of the town's past. It is also worth looking at the fabric of the building itself - the beamed ceilings, windows set in deep recesses and surviving fragments of 16th-century plasterwork.
