Brama Brzostowska 1, Głogów
The castle in Głogów was founded in the 13th century as the seat of the local Piast line. Until the 16th century it served defensive purposes, later it was gradually turned into a palace-like residence. Its present appearance results from post-war reconstruction and successive conservation work carried out in recent decades.
From the earliest phase there remain above all the Gothic tower of the 13th century, the corner buttresses and fragments of walls now hidden under plaster, including the gate passage. The castle stands on the edge of the old town, close to the Oder, so a visit is easy to combine with a short walk around the rebuilt historic centre.
The interiors house a museum built around finds from excavations: a hoard of more than 20,000 medieval coins, ornaments and coins from the 10th century and bronze artefacts. Separate rooms are devoted to the history of Głogów; there is also a reconstructed mint and a collection of old radio sets.
