The castle ruins in Danków lie in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, where the river valley narrows beneath a hill on the old border between Lesser Poland and Greater Poland. Of the once powerful defensive complex, the extensive earthen bastion fortifications surrounding the village have survived above all.
Written sources mention a fortified centre here as early as the Middle Ages, and in the 16th century a church and a tall tower stood on the site. For the next two centuries the place served as a bastion, then fell into decline and its walls were dismantled for building material. Since the mid-19th century no trace of the castle buildings has remained.
What survives are the bastion ramparts, the ruins of the gatehouse by the church and the remains of a masonry building known as the Castellan's House. The exact location of the Gothic and Renaissance castle is still uncertain and remains the subject of archaeological research. The site is open and well suited to a quiet walk combined with a look at the village architecture.
