The remains of the Tarnowski castle sit on a wooded hill rising south of Tarnów. Comfortable walking paths lead to the top and the hill itself is one of the favourite recreation areas of the townspeople. Only low relics of the walls have survived, readable mainly as the outline of the former layout.
The castle was built in the 14th century as the seat of the powerful Tarnowski family. It stood out for its cylindrical tower, an element usually reserved for royal and ducal residences. No reliable pictorial records have survived, so its full appearance remains unknown; knowledge of the wall layout came only with post-war archaeological work.
This is a destination for a short walk combined with a view of the town and the surrounding hills of the Carpathian Foothills. The ruins are looked after by a local association that organises knightly tournaments and historical displays here. The site also works well as a walk with children and with a dog.
