The castle in Świdwin rises above the Rega, right next to the town centre. Its Gothic body from the 13th century is complemented by later alterations, including Classicist details. The name commemorates the Knights Hospitaller, who held the stronghold for nearly three centuries.
After the period of the Order the building served various purposes — among others as a hospital — and in the 19th century, under Prussian rule, it was converted into offices. In 1945 a fire consumed the castle; reconstruction restored an appearance close to that of the Hospitaller era. A legend of an undiscovered knightly treasure is tied to these walls.
The oldest, northern wing is open to visitors — the tour takes about 45 minutes and it is worth checking the opening hours before arriving. The castle walls also house a library, a restaurant and a cinema, so the place stays alive all year and hosts cultural events, including a poetry competition.
