The castle in Golub-Dobrzyń rises on a hill above the Drwęca valley, dominating the town. It was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries as the seat of a Teutonic commandry, and later rebuilding gave it a Gothic and Renaissance character. The distinctive parapet and the regular quadrangular plan with an inner courtyard are visible from afar.
The interiors are open to visitors: you can see the museum display, the historic castle halls and the torture chamber, which invariably draws the greatest interest. The castle also houses a restaurant and guest rooms, so the site operates all year round, including in bad weather.
The Golub castle is known for historical re-enactments and knightly tournaments that attract audiences from across the region. Around it stretches the valley of the Drwęca, a protected river popular with canoeists. The town itself grew out of two centres on opposite banks of the river, which is still evident in its layout.
