The tower in Czchów is the best preserved part of a medieval stronghold raised on a limestone hill above the Dunajec Valley. The castle guarded the old trade route leading from Hungary, and its first masonry elements — the tower, the gatehouse and a residential wing enclosed by a wall — date from the late 13th century. After the site was abandoned in the 17th century the building fell into ruin, and the surviving walls were secured later on.
The heart of a visit is the climb to the top of the tower, where a viewing point has been arranged. It offers a panorama of the Dunajec Valley, the waters of Lake Czchowskie and the old town of Czchów with its market square. Below you can walk around the remains of the perimeter walls and trace the layout of the former complex, still legible despite the gaps.
The site is open seasonally, in spring and summer; outside the season the ruins can only be viewed from the outside. Steep stairs lead up the tower, so it is not a place for strollers. The visit is short and combines well with a walk around Czchów or a stop by Lake Czchowskie.
