The Górka Castle in the heart of Szamotuły

The castle in Szamotuły is a group of buildings laid out on an L-shaped plan, standing on flat ground in the centre of this town in northern Greater Poland. Unlike many Polish strongholds it was never abandoned — it remained inhabited throughout its history, which is why the tower and the main castle house have survived to our times in good condition.

History

The origins of the complex go back to the 14th century, when the estate belonged to the Szamotulski family. Later the property passed to the Górka family, one of the most powerful houses of Greater Poland at the time, and over the following centuries it changed hands repeatedly, coming among others under Prussian administration. Each owner left a mark on the buildings, so the complex combines elements from different periods.

What to see

The most recognisable part of the ensemble is the slender tower known as Halszka's Tower, linked to the story of Elżbieta Ostrogska, who was said to have been held here. Today the complex houses a museum running permanent and temporary exhibitions in several buildings — from collections of art and craft to displays devoted to the history of the town and the region.

The surroundings

The castle grounds are surrounded by a park with old trees, and next to it lies a small body of water, a remnant of the former moat. It is a pleasant place for a short walk after touring the exhibitions, all the more so as the park itself is well kept and quiet despite being close to the centre. The museum runs a wide educational programme and regularly organises workshops, so it works well when travelling with children, especially in poorer weather.
