Podskale, Wieś Rząsiny
Podskale Castle is the remnant of a stronghold hidden in the woods above the village of Rząsiny in the Izera Foothills. It was built on a narrow rocky ridge, and the walls merged with the bedrock so closely that in places it is hard to tell rock from masonry. Reaching it requires a short but steep climb.
A hillfort is thought to have existed here as early as the Middle Ages, while the masonry castle was begun at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. Damage and the lack of interest of successive owners led to its abandonment, and from the 18th century stone from the ruins was reused for new buildings. Its exact appearance remains unknown.
At the top, fragments of the defensive wall and relics of residential buildings survive. The greatest reward, however, is the panorama - from the rocky edge you can see the Karkonosze and the Izera Mountains. The site is freely accessible, with no tickets or gates, but calls for care: the rocks can be slippery and the edges are unsecured.
