Ujazdowski Castle stands on the Vistula escarpment in central Warsaw, close to the Łazienki park. Since its beginnings in the 14th century it served mainly as a residence rather than a fortress; successive rebuildings turned it into a summer seat of the rulers. Destroyed and restored many times, today it presents a regular, palatial body with corner towers.
The castle houses the Centre for Contemporary Art — an institution that exhibits and promotes avant-garde art. Besides the exhibition halls there is a cinema, a library and a restaurant, while one of the towers holds a small display devoted to the history of the castle itself. Concerts, screenings and meetings round off the programme.
The castle forms an ensemble with the Agrykola park and the Piaseczyński Canal, part of the baroque layout known as the Stanislavian Axis. The Royal Łazienki and the terraces on the escarpment are close by, so a visit easily extends into a longer walk through this part of Warsaw.
