Wieś Stołpie
About eight kilometres north-west of Chełm, right beside the road, stands a solitary stone structure almost 17 metres high. The tower in Stołpie has a rectangular plan and rises on a slight elevation among wet meadows, visible from a considerable distance. It is one of the most puzzling monuments of the Lublin region.
The building was raised at the end of the 12th century in a style combining Ruthenian and Byzantine influences, and research indicates it was in use for only about a century. Historians still argue about its function: a stronghold, a hermitage monastery and a building linked to the ducal court have all been proposed. The top storey held a richly decorated room, usually interpreted as a chapel.
The tower is viewed from the outside, walking around it; the interior now belongs to pigeons. A spring rises at its foot, once believed to have healing powers. The stop takes a quarter of an hour and combines well with Chełm and its chalk tunnels.
