A tree standing on its roots

The Pine on Stilts, also known as the Walking Pine, grows in Wełecz on the road from Pińczów to Busko-Zdrój, at the edge of a low rise. From a distance it looks ordinary; up close it astonishes, as the tree stands on exposed roots, lifted more than three metres above ground level.

Why it looks like this

The unusual shape results from sand once being extracted here. The ground around the tree subsided while the root system remained at its original level and hardened into a set of stilts. Some roots are as thick as a medium-sized trunk. The pine is over a hundred years old, in good condition, and has been protected as a natural monument since 2002.

Visiting

The stop is short and needs no preparation: a sandy path leads to the tree from the road. It pairs well with a visit to Busko-Zdrój and a tour of the Ponidzie region, where steppe reserves and gypsum hills lie nearby.
