Bytom
Segiet is a partial nature reserve between Bytom and Tarnowskie Góry, covering about 25 hectares of the summit area of Srebrna Góra in the Tarnowskie Góry Ridge. It protects a natural beech forest that grew back over former ore workings.
Majestic beeches reaching 35-40 metres grow here alongside sycamores, pines, spruces and rowans; the oldest stand is estimated at around 150 years. The undergrowth holds the martagon lily, common columbine and several orchids, including helleborines, bird's-nest orchid and lady's slipper.
The underground workings beneath the reserve serve as a winter roost for bats, among them long-eared, serotine, Myotis and whiskered species. Forest paths cross the area and an hour is enough to walk them. The reserve adjoins the UNESCO-listed complex of historic ore mines in Tarnowskie Góry.
