Łuknajno, Mikołajki
Łuknajno Lake is a faunal reserve within the Masurian Landscape Park, about five kilometres east of the centre of Mikołajki. The protected area covers nearly 1,200 hectares, of which the lake itself takes up 680 hectares.
The reserve was created to preserve one of the largest mute swan colonies in Europe. The shallow basin with a bottom covered in stoneworts and the extensive reed beds also suit ducks, grebes and waders, especially during migration periods.
The area has been protected since 1947 and in 1976 joined the worldwide network of UNESCO-MAB biosphere reserves. The lake is linked by a narrow canal to Lake Śniardwy and lies at about 115 metres above sea level. A field station of the University of Warsaw operates on the eastern shore, and birds are watched from towers and boardwalks along the trail.
