Białystok
Las Zwierzyniecki is a nature reserve right in Białystok, next to Zwierzyniecka Street. It protects 33.6 hectares of moist oak-hornbeam forest. The reserve was established in 1996 for its natural and educational value, and the whole area is owned by the city.
A network of paths runs through the woods. The main avenue is ten metres wide and surfaced with crushed stone, while the remaining paths are no wider than two metres. The routes are flat and easy, so a relaxed walk around the reserve takes roughly an hour. The stately hornbeams and alders stand out, some of them over a hundred years old.
The name recalls the former game park of the Branicki family — a fenced hunting ground used for court hunts. Today it is the green backyard of the district, popular with local residents. The most convenient place to leave a car is the car park on Świerkowa Street.
