Katedralna 11A, Wolin
Wzgórze Wisielców lies south of the centre of Wolin, on the slopes of the Gołogóra hill, which rises to 21 metres above sea level. Its treeless summit holds the oldest and best preserved barrow cemetery in Western Pomerania, dated to the 9th and 10th centuries.
At the end of the 19th century 93 barrows were counted here, of which 34 graves survive today. The dead were buried both by cremation and by inhumation, which confirms that early medieval Wolin was a multicultural and multi-faith centre. Women's graves proved to be more richly furnished than men's, and one barrow was surrounded by a palisade burnt before the mound was raised.
It has nothing to do with the ancient graves. In later centuries pirates and robbers who preyed on merchants sailing towards the sea were executed on this hill. Today it is reached on foot from town, between the forest park and the municipal beach.
