The Bison Enclosure is a breeding and display facility run by Woliński National Park, hidden in the forest on the eastern edge of Międzyzdroje. The extensive fenced grounds of about 28 hectares were opened to visitors in 1976, when the first bison brought from the Borecka and Białowieża Forests arrived here. Today the enclosure is usually home to between six and a dozen animals, and one or two calves are born every year.
The animals live in conditions close to natural, among beech and pine woodland, so watching them takes a little patience. Newborn bison are given names beginning with the syllable Po, which has become the trademark of the Wolin herd.
The visitor route runs along the fence and leads to wooden viewing platforms from which the herd can be observed comfortably. Boards along the path describe the species and their habits. Besides bison, wild boar and roe deer also live here, and separate aviaries hold birds of prey, including white-tailed eagles and eagle owls, mostly individuals that could not return to the wild because of injuries.
The enclosure lies only about two kilometres from the centre of Międzyzdroje, so instead of driving it is worth walking here. The blue trail of the West Pomeranian Way of St James passes this way, and the walk takes roughly thirty-five minutes in the shade of tall forest.
This is a short but very rewarding attraction for families with children and a natural stop while exploring the island of Wolin. The paths are hardened and gentle, so prams cope with them easily. A visit usually takes about half an hour, so it is best combined with a longer walk in the national park.
