Sandomierz
Góry Pieprzowe, known locally as Pieprzówki, stretch above the Vistula just beyond Sandomierz. They are built of Cambrian shales some 500 million years old, which weather into grains resembling peppercorns, hence the name of the range.
The highest point rises only a few dozen metres above the valley, yet it opens a broad panorama of the Vistula and the old town of Sandomierz. A red trail about 2.5 km long leads here from the Old Market Square; the climbs to the ridge are short but steep and slippery after rain.
The slopes are covered with xerothermic grasslands and steppe vegetation, and Pieprzówki are famed for the largest concentration of wild roses in Poland: 12 of the country's 25 species grow here. The best time to visit is the turn of May and June, when thousands of shrubs come into bloom.
