Tuchola
Uroczysko Piekiełko is the wildest fragment of the Brda river within the Brda River Valley reserve, in the Tuchola Landscape Park. Here the river cuts into the gorges of a terminal moraine, which makes its current far swifter than on the neighbouring stretches.
The gorge walls fall away at angles reaching fifty degrees in places. Fallen trees and boulders just below the surface create drops and whirlpools that give this section a mountain character — which is why Piekiełko is a favourite part of kayaking trips in the Tuchola Forest. Nearby grow oaks about seven hundred years old, protected as natural monuments.
The boulders in the current were the bane of the raftsmen who floated timber this way and christened the section Hell, later softened to Little Hell. They gave names to the largest stones: Tłusty, Kierda, Warkota and Owczarz. Cars are left by the Świt forester's lodge, from where a short path leads down to the river.
